The Twin Cycle Trail
Stretching between the Bay of Islands in the east to Hokianga Harbour in the west, this cycle trail is rich in history. Coastal views, wetlands, native forest and rolling farmland can all be enjoyed on this coast-to-coast ride between the popular Bay of Islands and peaceful Hokianga Harbour. Following smooth rail trail, dedicated cycle paths and country roads, it also offers an opportunity to visit historic and cultural sites while enjoying the sub-tropical climate for which Northland is famous.
Featuring on- and off-road riding, this trail is generally flat and wide with a smooth surface and gentle climbs, making it suitable for riders of most abilities.
Wonderful Walking Journeys
A wonderful way to see Northland is on foot, exploring one of many fantastic walking tracks. The choice is varied – take a sheltered leisurely bush walk, hug a giant tree, follow a coastal pathway or challenge yourself with a steep climb to views which take your breath away. Here’s a selection.
Kerikeri Walks – from 2 to 6 kilometres
Kerikeri’s network of tracks form a series of bush walks that pass five waterfalls. The tracks are within each reach of the town and vary in length from 2 to 6 kilometres. They make an ideal family walking holiday or a walking weekend.
Bay of Islands Coastal Walkway – return 8 hours
This full circle walkway follows the coastline over beaches and bays across mangrove boardwalks and through areas of bush and wetland – includes ferry trips between Opua and Okiato.
The Boulder Valley Walk – 1 hour
The loop walk takes you around a unique valley of fluted basalt boulders, some up to 30m high and thought to be 2.8 million years old.
The Dukes Nose – 2 hours
The Wairakau Stream Track follows the stream behind the hut towards the top of Duke’s Nose where you can enjoy spectacular views of Whangaroa Harbour. Pre-book a water taxi to collect you and return you to your car.
Mangonui Heritage Trail – 1.5 hours
This trail starts and finishes at the historic Courthouse (now an art gallery). It offers a view of some of the great wealth of Māori and European history associated with the area.
AH Reed Kauri Park – return from 10 minutes
The remains of one of the original Kauri forest contains walking tracks, a lovely waterfall, and a spectacular tree-top boardwalk passing by 500 year old Kauri trees.
Cape Brett Track -7-8 hours /16.5km each way
The track, which starts in Rawhiti, follows rugged terrain for 16.5km through native bush. It ends below the lighthouse at Cape Brett Peninsula. See dramatic coastal views and steep cliffs. A water taxi can be prebooked for your return.
These are just some of the walks and hikes available in the beautiful Northland Region – all close to Treghan Lodge where you can rest and relax in luxury after an active day enjoying the beautiful scenery…….
Te Paki Coastal Track 3-4 days / 48km one way
This track follows the stunning coastline from Spirits Bay (Kapowairua ) on the North Eastern Coast, past Cape Reinga (Te Rerenga Wairua) and Cape Maria van Dieman, and finishes at Te Paki Stream on the West Coast.
