Some places invite you to slow down.
Others invite you to reflect. The Hokianga is one of those places.
Just 45 minutes from Treghan Lodge, the landscape begins to change. Rolling countryside gives way to wide harbour views, dramatic white sand dunes and settlements that have played an important role in the story of Aotearoa New Zealand.
It’s a place that feels very different from the Bay of Islands, yet it’s one of Northland’s most rewarding day trips.

Our Journey West
During our own mid-winter staycation, we decided to become tourists in our own region and spend the day exploring the Hokianga.
Although we’ve visited before, this time we wanted to experience it as many of our guests do, taking our time and enjoying the journey as much as the destination.
We, of course, left Kerikeri later than planned, arriving in Rawene around lunchtime. After enjoying a relaxed lunch at The Boatshed Café overlooking the harbour, we checked out No 1 Gallery continued on to Opononi and Omapere and then came back and took the car ferry to Kohukohu.
It wasn’t just the scenery that made an impression. One of our favourite memories was parking in the shade in rawene with Codie. As often happens, he quickly made new friends. Two local women stopped to chat to Codie, my pink hair, the best cafe to go to and life in Rawene. We arrived as visitors, but for a few minutes we simply felt like neighbours.
As we drove further, we found ourselves stopping far more often than we’d expected.
The sweeping harbour, the towering white sand dunes across the water and the quieter pace of life all encouraged us to slow down and simply take it all in.
By the time we began the drive back to Kerikeri, we’d realised something. A few hours was just not enough.
There were still places we’d hoped to visit, including Māngungu Mission House and Manea – Footprints of Kupe, and we are already talking about our next trip.
That’s probably the best recommendation we can give. The Hokianga isn’t somewhere to rush through. It’s somewhere to experience.
The Journey
From Treghan Lodge, the drive west takes around 45 minutes to Rawene.
The roads are easy and, before long, the familiar landscapes around Kerikeri give way to rolling countryside, wide harbour views and the expansive beauty of the Hokianga. The journey itself quickly becomes part of the experience inviting you to slow down long before you reach the water.
A Harbour Like No Other
The Hokianga Harbour feels very different from the Bay of Islands.
The colours seem softer, the water darker and the surrounding hills more dramatic. Across the harbour, the vast white sand dunes create one of Northland’s most recognisable landscapes, providing a striking contrast that stays with you long after you’ve left.
There’s a quietness here that’s difficult to describe.
The pace is slower, the settlements feel deeply connected to their surroundings and there’s a genuine sense of stepping into another chapter of Northland.
Where the Story Begins
The Hokianga isn’t just beautiful. It’s one of the places where the story of Aotearoa New Zealand begins.
Māori tradition tells that the great Polynesian navigator Kupe first made landfall here after discovering Aotearoa, giving the harbour immense cultural significance.
The Hokianga remains one of New Zealand’s most significant places in Māori history and identity.
Even visitors with only a basic understanding of New Zealand’s history often comment on the sense that this is somewhere special.
Our Favourite Stops
Each settlement around the harbour has its own personality.
Rawene is one of New Zealand’s oldest towns, where heritage buildings line the waterfront and the little vehicle ferry becomes part of everyday life.
Across the harbour, Kohukohu offers another glimpse into Northland’s timber and maritime history, with beautifully preserved buildings overlooking the water.
Further around the harbour, Opononi and Omapere provide breathtaking views across to the towering white sand dunes. It’s the sort of place where you’ll almost certainly find yourself pulling over simply to admire the view.
Lunch by the Harbour
We stopped for lunch at The Boatshed Café in Rawene, enjoying a relaxed meal overlooking the harbour.
It suited the Hokianga perfectly.
Friendly, welcoming and completely unhurried.
It’s the kind of place where lunch naturally stretches a little longer than you’d planned.
By the time we revist Rawene, the cafe in No 1 Gallery will be open under new managemenmt – a treat!
When We Go Again…
Next time we’d leave earlier.
We’d allow the whole day and include the places we simply ran out of time to visit.
Manea – Footprints of Kupe would be high on the list, offering a powerful storytelling experience that brings the history and traditions of the Hokianga to life.
We’d also visit Māngungu Mission House, where one of New Zealand’s most significant historical events, the country’s largest signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, took place.
And we’d still leave plenty of time simply to stop along the harbour, enjoy the scenery and soak up the atmosphere.
Our Recommendation
If you’re planning a visit to the Hokianga, don’t think of it as somewhere to tick off a list of attractions.
Leave after breakfast, allow the full day, linger over lunch, stop whenever a view catches your eye and leave room for unexpected discoveries.
The journey is every bit as memorable as the destination itself.
Back at Treghan
As you drive back towards Kerikeri, the landscape gradually changes once again.
Before long you’re back at Treghan Lodge, perhaps with a glass of Northland wine on your private deck, listening to the birds in the gardens and reflecting on a day that feels very different from exploring the Bay of Islands.
Some places impress you with their scenery. The Hokianga stays with you because of its history, its people, their friendliness and its quiet sense of place.
It’s not simply another destination in Northland.
It’s somewhere you’ll almost certainly want to return to.
