This one is about enjoying the journey.
Around 40 minutes north of Treghan Lodge, the rolling green countryside gradually gives way to the sparkling waters of Doubtless Bay. Historic villages, quiet beaches, galleries, cafés and peaceful coastal views make this one of our favourite places to spend a relaxed day.
We visited in mid-winter and were reminded why this is such a lovely time of year to explore Northland. The roads were quiet, the beaches almost empty, and the sunshine made the water sparkle all around Doubtless Bay.
We’ve visited many times over the years, and every trip seems to reveal something a little different.
The Journey
The drive from Treghan Lodge is an easy 40 minutes through gently rolling Northland countryside.
It’s a lovely drive at any time of year, but winter has a special charm. The roads are quieter, the air is crisp and clear, and the sunlight seems to make the bays sparkle even more brightly.
One of the pleasures of this trip is that there’s never any need to rush. There are countless opportunities to pull over, admire the view and simply enjoy the slower pace that makes Northland such a wonderful place to explore.
Arriving in Mangōnui
Mangōnui has managed to retain the character of both a working fishing village and a much-loved holiday destination. Parking is easy, with plenty of spaces along the waterfront and near the cafés, making it simple to leave the car and wander.
The village itself is full of beautifully preserved timber buildings that tell the story of its maritime past. Today many house galleries, cafés, boutiques and local businesses, creating a village that’s every bit as enjoyable to browse as it is to photograph.
One of the first places we noticed this time was Antoinette’s, with its lovely clothing and gifts displayed invitingly in the window. Even when we’re not intending to shop, it’s difficult not to wander inside for a look.
Art, History and Harbour Views
Mangōnui has always had a creative feel, and we never visit without spending time in its galleries. The Mangōnui Gallery occupies the village’s former courthouse, built in 1892. Upstairs, you can still stand where the judge once presided. Looking out across the harbour from the bench, we couldn’t help wondering how anyone managed to concentrate on the cases before them with such a magnificent view outside the window.
We also enjoyed browsing Artisan Gallery, another lovely showcase of local artists and craftspeople.
Walking further along the waterfront brings you to the famous Mangōnui Fish Shop. It was pleasantly busy when we visited, with people enjoying lunch outside overlooking the harbour. Even if you decide to eat elsewhere, it’s worth wandering to enjoy the atmosphere.
From there it’s only a short stroll onto the wharf, where the harbour opens out before you. We spent a while simply watching the boats and enjoying the peaceful outlook before continuing our walk.
Lunch by the Water
Our regular lunch stop is Jesse’s Restaurant on the waterfront.
It’s become something of a tradition whenever we visit. We enjoyed a leisurely brunch overlooking the harbour – the coffee, as always, was excellent. If you’re looking for another popular option, The Little Kitchen is also well worth considering.
After lunch there seemed little reason to hurry away. Like so much of Mangōnui, it’s the sort of place that encourages you to sit a little longer and simply enjoy where you are.
Exploring Doubtless Bay
Mangōnui is only part of what makes this day trip so enjoyable. The surrounding coastline is dotted with beautiful beaches, each with its own personality.
Just before you reach the main village of Coopers Beach, drive down to the beach car park and enjoy a walk along the sand. Turning left from the accessway leads to a particularly peaceful stretch of beach that we’ve always enjoyed.
We often stop at Beach Box beside Four Square at Coopers Beach for a coffee and something light. Their coffee is consistently excellent and they serve a range of paninis, pastries and other café favourites. You can relax at one of the outdoor tables or take your coffee away to enjoy elsewhere.
Driving through Cable Bay is another reminder of why Doubtless Bay is such a popular holiday destination. On sunny winter days the light dances across the water, and if you feel like an ice cream, the local dairy has earned quite a reputation with both locals and visitors.
Continue around to Taipa before making your way back towards Kerikeri. We paused again here, watching seabirds gliding effortlessly above the beach and soaking up yet another beautiful coastal view.
Why We Keep Coming Back
Every destination has its own personality. Russell is rich in history. The Hokianga invites quiet reflection.
Mangōnui and Doubtless Bay simply encourage you to slow down and enjoy the day.
Perhaps it’s wandering through galleries housed in heritage buildings. Perhaps it’s sitting beside the harbour over lunch, strolling along almost empty beaches or discovering another favourite place for coffee.
Whatever the reason, we always return home feeling as though we’ve had a proper day away without ever travelling very far.
