Gardens at Treghan

The nearly bare land was perfect for Anna’s vision to create a piece of paradise.

Whilst living in Wellington, she had created several gardens on a smaller scale and studied books by the famous Rosemary Verey, Penelope Hobhouse, Vita Sackville-West, John Brooks, David Culp, Beth Chatto and many others.

Treghan Lodge is set on nearly 2 acres of land amidst New Zealand’s beautiful Bay of Islands. Some of the land is bush (to keep our Kiwi birds happy), but the majority is home to lovely landscaped gardens, (English cottage style) which have featured in NZ House & Garden Magazine, the 2020 NZ House and Garden Tour and several Rotary Garden Safaris.

Liquidambar trees greet guests in the forecourt and the front reception is framed by Cercis canadensis Hearts of Gold.

The garden consists of different areas, some lawn, each with their own character.

A substantial number of mature trees provide a structural backdrop to the gardens.

Rhododendron, Camellia, Azalea and Maples abound, with plenty of other species, including a stunning Liriodendron and a beautiful ornamental lime (Tilia cordata Spring Glow).

Garden beds are filled with too many plant species to count, including perennials such as Euphorbia, Lavendar, Geums, Sage, Digitalis, Salvia, Roses, Astelia, Hydrangea, Heuchera and Alstroemeria as well as many bulbs.

The grounds are available for exploration by all guests staying at Treghan and we do welcome groups for garden visits by appointment.
